Understanding the Mechanism
At its core, a speed camera uses sensors or radar to detect a vehicle’s speed as it passes. These cameras can be either fixed or mobile and are strategically placed in areas known for speeding incidents or accidents. When a vehicle passes a speed camera, if it is travelling over the pre-set speed limit, the camera鈥檚 system triggers a response.
The most common types are radar-based and use Doppler technology. This method relies on the change in frequency of the radar waves as they bounce off moving vehicles; the bigger the frequency change, the faster the vehicle is moving. Another type uses sensors embedded in the road’s surface to measure speed as vehicles pass over them.
Once the camera detects a speeding vehicle, it captures a photograph, which typically includes the vehicle’s registration plate and sometimes the driver. This information is then processed and can lead to a speeding ticket.
