Understanding the Pressure Change
When an airplane ascends or descends, the air pressure outside changes rapidly compared to the pressure inside the cabin and, more critically, within your ears. This difference in pressure can cause discomfort or even pain, leading to what we commonly refer to as our ears “popping.”
Inside your ear, the Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of your nose, helping to equalize pressure. As the plane climbs or descends, the air pressure outside decreases or increases respectively, causing a pressure imbalance. Your ears pop as the Eustachian tubes open to let air in or out, balancing the pressure between the inner and outer ear.
